Understanding image optimization starts with looking at the html code of a website. When an image is inserted into a page, it is listed within the backend code in a certain way. This description not only helps those visually impared but can give Google a better idea of what the image is. Here’s an example of an HTML code snippet for a photo of a dog wearing a red collar:

<img src=”dog-with-collar.jpg” alt=”White labrador dog wearing red collar” title=”Dog With Collar”/>

Difference Between Alt Text & Titles

In our example, you’ll notice that there are three parts: img src, alt, and title. These tags sometimes called attributes, are the most important aspects of customizing an image for SEO. While the text for the alt and title tag may seem similar, the difference lies in the definition.

  • Alt attributes – Also known as alternate text, the purpose of the alt attribute is to give search engines and screen readers a textual description of the image.
  • Title attributes – As it implies, the title attribute is the actual title of your image. This may be similar to the original image source, which is the filename (or source) of the image.

Why Is Image SEO So Important?

Image SEO is important for two reasons: accessibility and usability. The original and sole purpose of alt text has always been to describe an image. For those who are visually impaired, having a textual description gives context to your content and helps identify the image being used.

Optimizing your alt and title attributes is also a benefit for user experience, which in turn, enhances your search engine ranking. Because Google can’t actually “see” an image, keywords in the alt text help search crawlers scan a page and understand the purpose of those images. Instead of having to guess what your content is about, Google can quickly decipher your images and ensure that your content isn’t ranking for unintended keywords.

How to Fully-Optimize Your Images

According to Google, there are a number of image SEO best practices to keep in mind when you’re adding an image to a post or webpage. Here are three things to consider:

  1. Customize the name of your image file before uploading it. Something like dog-with-collar.jpg is going to be more informative than IMG0056.jpg
  2. Add your target keywords into the alt text in a way that makes sense. In other words, avoid filling the alt text with keywords so that your site isn’t pulled for spam.
  3. Describe the image specifically so that all visitors, regardless of visual ability, can understand what is being displayed.

Enhance Your Ranking Factors

Like anything else in digital marketing, there are a number of factors that will determine whether your images appear in search results or not. Besides optimizing your alt and title tags, the design of your website can positively or negatively affect your search ranking.
