The Best Ways to Encourage Inclusion in the Workplace

Diverse ideas and viewpoints can often lead to creative breakthroughs and innovation. The Benefits of Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace

  • Employees are more engaged and contribute more to the organization.
  • Diversity boosts creativity, innovation, and productivity.
  • A diverse workforce is better able to connect with customers of all demographics.
  • Inclusivity has been shown to improve employee retention and increase job satisfaction rates.

Make Diversity a Priority

One of the best ways to prioritize diversity is in the hiring process. Alter your hiring messaging to convey your workplace diversity priorities, encouraging all qualified applicants to apply. Interview applicants with intent, seeking out qualified professionals, but also individuals who can bring something new to the table.

Provide a Safe Space

Provide employee training designed to decrease discrimination and build awareness. Set aside time to spend with employees, and encourage open communication and collaboration amongst your team. Institute a no-tolerance policy on discriminatory language or behavior and enforce it.

Address Missteps

Nobody’s perfect, and every workplace has friction. When there are mixed messages or outdated, discriminatory policies, address them with employees. Outline what you’ll do to avoid similar missteps in the future. If an employee offends another employee, schedule time with both to discuss the matter and if necessary, provide additional training or disciplinary action.

A Sense of Belonging

Inclusion is essentially offering employees a sense of belonging. It should be a priority for employers because it ensures that all employees, regardless of their background and experiences, can be connected and offered the same opportunities for advancement. In turn, this creates a more efficient, creative and happy workplace for everyone.
